Experience in Communication for Development and Social Change

2008, Lecturer in Media, Communications and Development, Department of Media and Communication, London School of Economics and Political Science

2007-2008, Senior Lecturer and Postgraduate Studies Coordinator in Communication for Development, School of Social Sciences, Fort Hare University

Work involves managing the graduate programme of communication and this includes teaching and supervising 15 Hons, Masters and PhD students in areas related to communication for development, health communication, ICT for development and agricultural communications.

1999-2005, Training and Teaching Media for Development, University of Malawi

Developing the Media for Development Program: Developed a proposal and syllabi for the establishment of a new undergraduate four-year Media for Development Program at the University of Malawi in 2004. The University began offering the programme in January 2005, thus becoming the first African university to offer undergraduate degree training in communication for development.

Teaching subjects: Media and Development, Community Engagement and Social Mobilization, Broadcasting for Development, Participatory Rural Communication Appraisal, Development Reporting, Radio and Video Production.

Research supervision: Work also involved working with students and rural communities in using participatory learning systems and study circles towards the development of educational communications about sustainable development.

2000-2002, Community Engagement towards Natural Resource Management

Capacity building and stakeholder management

As a strategy towards field-testing of a community engagement model, the Participatory Rural Communication Appraisal (PRCA), I was a research team member comprising the University of Malawi’s Biology Department, IUCN-Harare, SADC Centre of Communication for Development and local communities, in learning stakeholder concerns on management and conservation of inland lake resources.  PRCA helped address the conflicts surrounding the poor networking between local village committees and fisheries department, and rebuilt confidence in community-based fish conservation

Conflict resolution and knowledge brokering in eco-tourism

Was a student research team member from Natal University on a PEACE Foundation-funded conflict resolution initiative surrounding the management of Masebe Nature Reserve in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Conflicts surrounded community rejection of the Reserve Project. Extensive consultations and deliberative dialogues resulted in renewed commitment from communities and government departments to share responsibility for the conservation and management of the Reserve and its resources.

Development Journalist, UNICEF-funded Safe Motherhood Campaign

Planning and organising stakeholder consultation

Formed part of a four-man team conducting background research on challenges of child and maternal health in rural and regional communities in Malawi. Research involved stakeholder consultation at Ministry of Health, local health facilities, farmers’ clubs, focus groups with nurses and other service providers and communities of rural women.

Communication and social mobilization

Used part of the background research to develop entertainment-educational radio dramas known as Zimachitika (It Happens), which addressed challenges rural women were facing in practising safe motherhood strategies. Plays examined issues from the point of view of rural and regional communities.

Strengthening community capacity in safe motherhood

Led a two-man team mobilizing and training community groups in forming and conducting radio forums, where communities discussed radio dramas, results of which fed back into the playwriting process and enabled communities to implement actions agreed during community dialogues.

1997, Leadership in Participatory Action Research

Supervised research assistants during a study funded by the Technical Co-operation from the Government of Germany (GTZ) called Anthropological conditions for democracy conditions in Malawi. Work involved developing job description for researchers, managing finances and project equipment, training assistants in conducting quantitative and qualitative surveys and contributing towards final report writing.

1995-1996, Social Mobilisation

Was a community theatre troupe member in researching and acting plays in rural communities empowering rural families to enrol young girls in basic primary education, as part of a USAID-funded basic education project, Girls’ Attainment of Basic Literacy Education (GABLE).

Work involved living and engaging with communities and stakeholders as a pathway towards understanding cultural, historical, geographic, social and economic factors holding young girls back from pursuing primary education. Such information was employed in formulating entertainment-educational dramas performed in the communities towards motivating them to send young girls to school.
