Measuring Effectiveness

One major challenge facing the use of media and communications in support of development policy implementation revolves around proving whether a specific aspect of social change could be attributed to certain communication interventions. Even if a communication process could be linked to a particular change, how could researchers be sure that the said change is not as a result of one radio program but another? Responding to this conundrum, the African Farm and Rural Radio Initiative (AFRRI) commissioned a study to examine the links between radio-based communications and better farming practices that enhance food security. Communicating with Radio is a report that I wrote for the Farm Radio International, resulting from the examination of the effectiveness studies that have been conducted in Africa in relation to the use of farm and rural radio to support agricultural development.
